Welcome for advising! For your Advising Appointment with me you have to come prepared with filled-in the green-form and your Catalog. The new students must get prior general advising by attending orientation session(s) provided by the College and/or by reviewing the corresponding handouts and be familiar with graduation requirements (if needed obtain help from ME Office and ME Director for Undergraduate Studies). Study your Catalog and graduation requirements and decide on your choices for the next semester course registration. If in doubt list all possible choices and I will try to help you in making final selections. Do your homework; since you will spend a lot of time and money in order to graduate, you should spend time to study the Catalog and understand the "Graduation Requirements."

Fill in the green-form completely before the advising (see Example): check if the courses are offered next semester; check the course description from the Catalog, list all prerequisites/corequisites and circle "yes" if appropriate, or remove the course from the list if answer is "no."
To complete the advising leave the signed green-form after advising in ME Office to be filed, and register for your classes.

The advising per see is required but you are free to make any decision you like. We will try our best to help and guide you towards your graduation. We will tell you what we think is the best for you. However, the final decision and responsibility is yours: after all it is your time, your money, and your freedom. After being advised of what we think is the best way for you to graduate, you may freely make your decision by registering any course you have prerequisite for, dropping and/or adding courses later etc.

Keep in mind that in order to graduate you need to satisfy all graduation requirements from a Catalog of your choice during your stay at NIU (bring that Catalog for advising!). You may change the Catalog year any time and satisfy its requirements, but you can not mix-and-match different Catalogs.

I wish you productive and successful stay at NIU and speedy graduation !
